The 12-year old food critic

Yup, they get younger and younger as years pass. Kids blogging about politics aren’t the only thing that’s quite disarming (and charming) to know, but also David Fishman, a 12-year old who aspires to be a Zagat writer.

Normally passionate for seafood, David ordered a specialty of the restaurant, a prosciutto, as well as what the menu called una insalata di rucola e parmigiano. “Good variety,” he wrote in the leather-bound notebook he brought along, restaurant-critic-like. “Softish jazz music. Seem to enjoy kids but not overly.” In other words, no cloying smiles or insulting offer of grilled cheese.

Food is David’s life — well, food and swimming and volunteering and student council and green rooftops (his school, Fieldston, has one). But he really likes food. At 6, he won a competition at the Crumbs Bakery for the best new cupcake concept (David’s Peppermint Patty Cupcake). As a prize, he got a free cupcake every Wednesday for a year — and then, even though he wasn’t technically supposed to, for more than a year after that. Sadly, eventually all the people who worked there were replaced. “Now they don’t know anything about it,” he said.

I remember when I was twelve, I thought I was so cool and know everything, but it turns out I’m still a kid. After reading about these kids blogging about politics and critiquing food, I have to wonder, are kids these days growing up too fast? I sure hope they still have time in between blog posts to go out and play.

Best-ever Freeware Programs

As much as possible, I like keeping my computer clean and licensed. I believe in paying for licensed software, and I also believe that there are good free software available that you can use in lieu of expensive software.

Thanks to Gizmo’s Tech Support Alert, looking for the best freeware programs are now made easier. Programs are categorized so you can easily find what you need.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to try out a couple of programs that I’ve just downloaded.

What’s your message for Obama?

I opened my flickr this evening and got a link to this flickr pool: Message for Obama.

Message for Barack Obama

What do you want to say to Obama, now that he’s about to become President of the US?

A greeting?
A warning?
Some sage (or silly) advice?
An idea?

Hold up your message to the camera and tell the world what you’d like to tell him.

Come on, don’t be shy. To participate, you only need to do three simple things:

1. Write your message on a bit of paper (or an envelope, or a post-it-note, or a napkin, or your hand…or anything at all) – write it clearly so we can read it
2. Take a picture(even the crappest camphone or photobooth/isight shot will do)
3. Add it to the group.
(please tag your picture “messageforobama” so we can find it)

The photos included in the pool are have pretty diverse messages and are quite interesting to read. Of course, the photos, like the one pictured here (and headlining the flickr blog) shows the creativity of each person.

What’s YOUR message for President Barack Obama?

Gmail just keeps on getting better

After years of being invite only, Gmail is now open to everybody to sign up! But then again, who in this day and age still don’t have a Gmail address?

Added perks for those signing up is the 5GB storage for e-mail, a 500% from the 1GB they offered when they first started four years ago. Best of all, you can now use Gmail to access your other e-mail addresses, as long as it has POP3 access.

Best of all, all these nifty features are available for free! Guess it’s apparent who’s the best e-mail provider now, eh?
