Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs Writing Project

Despite being online for so long, I (still) consider myself fairly new to the Philippine blog scene. I never really stay in tune with what’s happening in the Philippine blogosphere, until I decided to concentrate on working on (and monetizing) my travel blog.

I never really understood Janette Toral’s Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs writing project when I first came across blogs with their nominations last year. Well, more like never really bothered (heehee); most of the blogs I subscribe to were not qualified anyway. This year, I have a longer RSS subscription list, and I blog hop more, so I actually have sites to nominate.

Langyaw (www.langyaw.com)
One of my favorite Filipino travel blog. Estan Cabigas is not only an adventurer, he’s also one heck of a photographer. And he’s the only blogger I’ve seen (so far) with an A- Lakbayan grade.

The not so talented DJ Montano (delfindjmontano.blogspot.com)
It’s pretty hard to deny how popular Brian Gorell’s blog is, and how it has further brought blogging into the limelight. What started off as an angst-ridden blog, Brian is now making a concious effort to tone down the hate, and use his blog as a way to raise awareness to the issues in the Philippines, specially those affecting gays, bisexuals, lesbians and transgendered people.

Whiff and a Sip (whiffandasip.wordpress.com)
I’ve only recently started a food blog, and thus got hooked on other food blogs. What I love about this blog is not just the photos, and the long list of restaurants I now have to try, but you can clearly see how much they (I’m assuming it’s a group blog) love and appreciate food. Also, that rating system? Short, sweet and straightforward. I love it.

That’s it for now. Turns out most of my subscribe blogs are older than July 2007 (one blog I’ve been itching to nominate started JUNE 2007 <_<). More to follow soon!

[EDIT - May 28, 2008] I found two more!

Munkey Music & Banana Feelings (vincedejesus.multiply.com/journal)
I discovered Vince’s blog through Gibbs Cadiz, one of last year’s Top Ten Emerging Influential Blogs. He has such a biting wit, and has the most brutally honest observations on the Philippine Entertainment scene. Here’s the post that made me a subscriber: What Things Really Mean in Personal Profiles.

SamJuan (samjuan.com)
Another chance discovery; if he hadn’t commented in JustWandering, I woulnd’t have known of his blog. One look at his header and you know it’s a winner: the Philippine flag wrapped around a person’s head, the face on the flag, Darna alongside the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam. I have to admit that my enthusiasm for his blog waned when I realized that it was written in Filipino. However, the entries are funny and insightful, and I realize that it wouldn’t be the same if it was written in English. Yup, this is the first Filipino/Tagalog blog in my RSS!

[EDIT - June 7, 2008] Two more food blogs!

eating and cooking(restauranthopping.blogspot.com)
At first glance, it may not look much. If this blog was a restaurant, it’s a place you might not even give a second glance. However, once you start reading, you’d know at once that Sakai knows what he’s talking about. He knows his food. The great thing about it is that most of the restaurants he feature aren’t in the mainstream yet (Well, I haven’t heard of some of them). Looking for a new place to try in Manila? Check out Sakai’s blog.

Davao Delicious (www.davaodeli.com)
Blogie’s Davao Delicious is pleasant to read. While others have castigated his blog for being “too positive” I see that what he’s doing is highlighting the positives of eating out in Davao city. This blog is an easy reference of the restaurants and cafes to hit when visiting this vibrant city in Mindanao. Davao Delicious is going to be extemely helpful if and when I finally make it to Davao.

[EDIT - July 21, 2008] Finally completed my Top Ten!

Pinoy Mountaineer (www.pinoymountaineer.com)
This blog is a one-stop shop for everthing you need to know about mountain climbing in the Philippines. Every featured mountain (or volcano) includes a background of the place, as well as itinerary to help you plan. A most impressive informative site.

Fritzified.com (www.fritzified.com)
Fritz Tentativa has a way with words — and pictures. With his biting wit (and massive rockstar potential [whatever that means]), he turns every blog post into…something someone with a biting wit and a massive rockstar potential would write. Armed with his Nokia N82, he snaps away, turning each moment into a photo you wouldn’t believe was taken with a camera phone. I guess that’s why he’s a diva ;)

Kainpinoy.com (www.kainpinoy.com)
Dahil gusto kong magbuhat ng sariling bangko. :P
